Theme 9: Gender, inequality, and conflict

Theme 9 will explore the link between gender norms and representation and conflict; and will study how discrimination, economic inequality, and lack of social mobility shape the scope for political violence.

gender

Females are demonstrated to be victims of conflict, through Gender Based Violence (GBV), sexual violence, or forced early marriage, but can also be pivotal actors in conflict resolution. However, there is few empirical research into causal determinants and consequences of GBV and females’ role in peacebuilding in times of conflict and in post-conflict contexts.

Theme 9 will explore the links between gender and conflict, concentrating on two focus areas:

  • The consequences and determinants of female targeted conflict. It has been documented that many forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) increase during times of war and conflict, and are also higher in post-conflict societies. However, data is lacking to provide rigorous empirical research on the causes and determinants of this phenomenon. Results of this research will also apply to internally displaced persons – who are mostly women; and will shed light on the role of experimental policies to change GBV norms.
  • The role of women in conflict resolution. Women and girls are not just the victims of conflict, they are also participants of resistance movements and active agents in the peacebuilding and recovery processes. Yet, it remains unclear whether female leaders are less prone or more likely to engage in war.
